LET’S GO: Team USA Training in KAZ Prior to the World C’Ships

Right now, you’re still correct to say “just days away”, but it won’t be too long until “hours away” becomes more appropriate.

With the 2019 World Championships fast approaching (wrestling is slated to begin at 11:00am local time in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan on Saturday), Team USA Greco is hard at work getting in some last-minute training to stay sharp for the battles that lie imminently ahead.

Alongside the ’19 World Teamers in Kazakhstan are members of the All-Marine Team. Just as has been the case the past two years, the Marines (who aren’t competing, unlike Ray Bunker and John Stefanowicz) are there to provide support in a variety of facets, but mostly during training sessions.

Key among them is Terrence Zaleski, the 82-kilogram competitor who himself enjoyed some breakout moments on the mat this season (and recently brought the heat in Tbilisi). When Zaleski isn’t tossing people around or preparing for competition, his primary duty is spreading the gospel of the All-Marine Team (and Greco in general). This is what he does — he is in fact a Public Affairs Officer.

Because Zaleski is in on the action as a partner in Kazakhstan — and because he is more than adept at snapping photos — he has graced us with a collection of training shots featuring the Greco World Team during what are some of the last moments they will have to prepare prior to the tournament.

You see a little bit of everyone in these photos: from Patrick Smith (77 kg, Minnesota Storm) and Adam Coon (130 kg, NYAC/Cliff Keen, world no. 2), to Ildar Hafizov (60 kg, Army/WCAP) and Joe Rau (87 kg, TMWC/Chicago RTC). Also visible are US National Team head coach Matt Lindland, 2019 World Team coach Bruce Robinson, Army/WCAP coach Spenser Mango, US Greco-Roman Operations Manager Gary Mayabb, Marines head coach Jason Loukides and anyone else who is in town to help engineer a historic, statement-making performance.
