Patrick Smith (77 kg, Minnesota Storm, 5PM #1) and Peyton Walsh (77 kg, Marines, 5PM #9) are both going to need a little time to decompress following their bronze-medal matches on Friday afternoon.

The medal round on Day 2 of the 2021 Matteo Pellicone Memorial began at 6:00pm local time in Rome, Italy and aired live in the US on FLOWrestling.

Unlike the morning session, which even in its number of US losses offered dramatic exchanges and encouraging outcomes, Friday’s pair of bronze bouts were surprisingly short and therefore bereft of thrill or suspense.

Walsh, who had went 1-1 earlier in the day, was primed to battle it out with longstanding vet Ashkat Dimulkhamedov (KAZ) but was unable to jam the shifter into gear. On the first meaningful breach, Dimulkhamedov cleared Walsh and took a wide open lane to the body. It was a takedown, and then much, much more. Dimulkhamedov’s gutwrench was uncompromising as he rolled Walsh three times to end the bout via tech in just :41.

Smith was up immediately after Walsh and though the methodology differed, the result did not. Just as the two-time World Team member started to work a later, Tamerlan Shadukaev (KAZ) roped Smith’s arm for four and transitioned to a conventional headlock. Smith fought and fought for as long as he could, but the signal for the fall eventually arrived. As is the case with Walsh, Smith also officially finishes fifth to close out the opening “Ranking Series” tournament of the season.

Notes:

  • Team USA finished 6th at the 2021 Matteo Pellicone Memorial with 72 points, behind India (78) and ahead of Egypt (28). Russia won the overall team race with 150 points over Kazakhstan (134) and Hungary (130).
  • Five Americans finished fifth — Ildar Hafizov at 60 kg, Sammy Jones at 63, Ray Bunker at 72, and Smith and Walsh.
  • Not counting Bunker’s defeat that was the result of an injury default or the match between Adam Coon and Cohlton Schultz on Thursday, the US exits Pellicone with a record of 9-22.
  • Three of the USA wins were technical falls. The remaining six were decisions.
  • Of the 22 collective losses endured by Americans, nine came via technical fall.

An overviewing recap with additional notes covering each of the weight categories represented by US athletes at Pellicone will be released this weekend on FLOWrestling.
