It was a tough second and final day at Thor Masters for the American squad, though that does not mean they were without a solid performance.
After finishing Friday’s slate of action with a come-from-behind victory, Logan Savvy (63 kg, NYAC) woke up on Saturday alive and well in the medal hunt. The same was true for two-time World Team member Jake Fisher (82 kg, Curby 3-Style), but two consecutive defeats eventually knocked him out of the race.
Day 2 of Thor Masters 2022 began at 4:30am local time from Nykobing Falster, Denmark and streamed live on the event’s official website.
Yesterday, Savvy emerged victorious from a close affair with Brian Kurt Santiago (DEN), which automatically put him within striking range of a podium spot. A chance for gold was unfortunately nullified in his Round 2 bout Saturday morning. Finnish prospect Tino Ojala — who later earned gold — put Savvy’s record at 1-1 in his pool on the heels of a 9-0 technical fall. But there was still a ticket waiting for the US rep in the bronze-medal match opposite Tim Bergfalk (SWE). Hard-fought it was, but ultimately a 2-1 decision for Bergfalk that concluded Savvy’s Thor Masters debut in fourth place.
Fisher — the only other American to have garnered a win on Friday and in the tournament as a whole — was edged by Marcel Hein (DEN) 2-1 in his second round match this morning. Needing another triumph to remain in the medal argument, Fisher next faced Lukas Ahlgren, who has become one of Sweden’s more formidable young Senior competitors. The result didn’t go Fisher’s way, as Ahlgren cruised 9-0 before closing out Thor Masters with top honors.
Thor Masters 2022 did not yield positive competitive outcomes for the brunt of the US roster. Age-groupers Jeremy Bockert (67 kg, IGA) and Colton Parduhn (67 kg, IGA), as well as current U23 World Teamer Mason Hartshorn (63 kg, CYC/West Coast Greco RTC), likewise struggled through their combined six matches.
The US contingent for this year’s running of Thor Masters was pieced together later than is the norm for an international trip. Bockert, Parduhn, and Savvy were all but confirmed for Denmark by the beginning of September; but Jessy Williams (67 kg, NYAC/Spartan RTC) and Fisher were added to the delegation more recently — and ’21 Senior/’22 U23 World Team member Peyton Omania (67 kg) was originally scheduled to compete until collegiate folkstyle procedures purportedly halted his eligibility to participate. Omania is in Denmark with U23 World/CYC teammate Hartshorn and is permitted to workout at this week’s Thor Masters training camp.
