The annual summer blowout for domestic age-group Greco-Roman wrestling concluded on Saturday featuring a long list of first-time champions that was highlighted by the performances of four young men who will soon be looking to earn World hardware (two of whom for a second straight year).
The finals of the 2023 16U and Junior National Championships began at 6:00pm local time from the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota and streamed live on FLOWrestling.
Both U17 World Champion Joel Adams (67 kg, TBW) and Junior World bronze Aden Attao (130 kg, Suples) won their respective weight categories on Saturday, which was not unfamiliar territory for either competitor. Adams entered the weekend having triumphed in Fargo twice previously while Attao first came away victorious last year after taking second in ’21. For Adams, who represented Nebraska at 152 lbs, the tournament offered another exhibition of his uniquely-tuned skillset and tenacity that has often translated into lopsided domestic outcomes. He had breezed through the first four rounds and was not tested until the semifinal round opposite Aliaksandr Kikinou (CA), son of the multi-time World medalist from Belarus bearing the same name. Kikinou sat back on an early Adams attempt to collect a takedown; but with a minute left in the period, Adams made his move. He seized on a bodylock and — although the attempt nearly came apart — stayed with it to deposit Kikinou to his back. No escape route was available, and the young phenom held position before the signal for the pin arrived in short order.
The title round was a one-off rematch of the U20 Trials finals series pitting Adams versus fellow top Greco prospect Jadon Skellenger (ID). Back in June, the former had swept the latter with the first bout having been a close call. It was just like that on Saturday evening.
Skellenger received the first passivity/par terre chance and was unable to capitalize further — but would do a fine job of pressuring Adams into stepping out to pick up another point in the second frame. The score was 2-0 in Skellenger’s favor when, with just over :20 to go, Adams zipped in on a body attack and converted an arching lift off the edge to net four big points. Skellenger fought hard for scorable positions till the end but none were forthcoming as Adams deflected any and all overtures to remain upright and walk away with a third age-group “stop sign”.
Mustafa Woodi (OH) holds the distinction of being the only wrestler to last all six minutes against Attao, who was as dominant as could be expected throughout the event. Shilo Jones (ID) was lights-out en-route to the final, but his opposition under the spotlight was too confident, convicted, and experienced to all-of-the-sudden stumble. Attao unfurled an arm throw for four; he next latched on a front headlock, rolled it twice, and the points necessary for a technical superiority had been achieved.
Drury & Bartelt
A four-pointer at the expense of Maksym Chubenko (OH) aided ’23 U20 World Teamer Landon Drury (CO) in emerging victorious from the semifinal round, a 6-2 decision that represented the Betterman Elite-trained wrestler’s closest contest in Fargo. The final brought to the forefront gifted Isaiah Powe (AL), who managed to surrender only one turn in the initial passivity/par terre with Drury — except he was then cited for a caution, which resulted in a PT reset. From top, Drury once again clasped for a gutwrench and, despite Powe ardently defending, rotated two turns for the VSU finish.
Like Adams, Sawyer Bartelt (FL) — 97 kg but 220 lbs for Fargo — had to occasionally bite down in his quest for a Junior National crown. In the round-of-16, Bartelt used the second-period passive chance to grab a must-have gutwrench to edge Mason Christian (MT); in the semis, he downed Jared Thiry (IA) 6-0 but was limited to four individual scores. Grit is what tends to be responsible for winning at Fargo, and Bartelt displayed just that, especially once the culminating bout arrived.
Oklahoman Oscar Williams checked into the hand-fight and did enough in the officials’ eyes to be granted the opening passivity/PT. A subsequent gut attempt broke loose after Bartelt floated the lock, earning two exposure points. The jousting was heavy through much of the bout with the scoring capped at 2-1 for Bartelt. A last-gasp challenge on the part of Williams as time expired that did not go his corner’s way added another point to Bartelt’s column for a 3-1 decision victory.
Black & Miess
Otto Black (CO) put together a most impressive tournament as he took out a string of terrific competitors en-route to capturing the 138 lbs crown. It was one VSU after another, with a 4-0 decision against Elijah Cortez (CA) the outlier. When the bracket was whittled down to just two, standing across from Black was recent Pan-Am silver Zan Fugitt (MO), who had survived a tough test in Dmytro Chubenko (OH) in the quarterfinal before defeating Matthew Beem (IA) to force the showdown with Black.
A passive on Fugitt paved the way for the initial haul of points. Black locked gut from top par terre and was able to negotiate two turns that equated to a 5-0 lead. A bodylock off the line from Black was next. The call on the throw was originally four points, which would have ended the match; but Fugitt challenged, the sequence was reduced to two points, and the bout resumed. Shortly thereafter, Black wailed a headlock that yielded four and tied a bow around his exceptional performance.
Fundamentally-sound and authentic was the tone for Ashton Miess (160 lbs, WI) from start to finish in Fargo. There were occasions in which Miess was pushed, as well. Stout potential prospect Thor Michaelson (WA) was an eager, pummel-happy dance partner for Miess but was on the outside-looking in when it came to converting points. A first-period gut in that one helped the Wisconsinite create a little distance in the eventual 7-2 win. Ben Smith (MD) in the semifinal defended well from par terre bottom and limited Miess to two passive points and two step-outs.
Stalking, and lots of it, is what escorted Miess to victory lane in the final opposite Leandro Araujo (ND). Three consecutive step-outs — with the third coming attached to a caution point — put Miess ahead 4-0 in the first period. More pressure early in the second period delivered the same result. Miess exploded forth on an attempt towards the boundary and Araujo was again cautioned, thus rendering a 6-0 score. One more step-out set the stage. Up 7-0 and with the curtains beginning to lower, Miess caught a run on a body attack, finished for two points, and had achieved the most significant domestic title of his young career.
16U: Detar & Medlin
Only one finals bout went to criteria — Will Detar‘s (113 lbs, PA) nailbiter against Titan Friederichs (MN). A tight trapped-arm gut from Friederichs by way of passivity delivered a 3-0 cushion heading into Period 2. Then it was Detar who took advantage of passivity by cranking a gutwrench. The turn bottled the scoring for both athletes, with Detar the winner of a rare by-the-book Greco match in Fargo.
Team champions Illinois eventually went over second-place Iowa by 22 points (213-191) but required wins in the final round to seal the deal. One in particular that stood out occurred at 132 lbs, where Wyatt Medlin persevered through what was a daunting field to help lead the charge. Medlin, like most who shined Friday and Saturday, had his share of lopsided wins. But not all of them were runaways. After starting out with three technical falls and 7-0 blanking in the quarterfinals (against tough Texan Bryce Palmer), Medlin had to scratch and claw to get past Declan Koch (WI), with a critical first-period gut the catalyst in what became a 3-2 decision.
Medlin was head 2-1 in the second period of the final opposed by Jake Miller in the final but saw that lead change when Miller scored a takedown. An answer-back took shape in the form of a Medlin takedown after the restart, which was also accompanied by a leg foul on Miller. The resulting par terre did not invite any follow-up offense, and with short time Miller received two points from a Medlin caution to make the score 6-4. A buzzer-beater attempt from Miller provided the opening for another two points for the Illinois product, who was one of that state’s three champs for ’23.
Logan & Mocco
One of the more sparkling showings at 16U came from Gabriel Logan (145 lbs) of New Jersey, whose trek to the title began in the round-of-128, meaning his run in Greco totaled seven matches; and, all seven of Logan’s wins were recorded via stoppage (five VSU, two pins). Operating against Nolan Fellers (IA) in the final, Logan executed a pair of front headlocks and closed with a four-point body attack.
Mike Mocco (220 lbs) of Florida wasted little time getting around back of Kai Calcutt (IL) to snare a takedown in the first period and immediately went to work on a reverse lift but his position was far too high and detached to execute. Calcutt was hit for passivity in the second period to expand Mocco’s margin by one. They battled in-tight for much of the remainder, and a late Mocco step-out followed by a caution meant that Calcutt had a shot to steal the match with a multi-point score as time ticked away — but Mocco stayed in the trenches to hold on for the razor-thin decision.
Notes:
- Drury, Adams, Bartelt, and Attao are all members of the ’23 U20 World Team that will be competing next month in Jordan.
- Ten of the 17 finals for 16U ended via technical fall. The rest were point decisions (including Detar’s win on criteria).
- Five of the 15 Junior finals were technical falls. There was also one pin.
