Four members of the 2019 US Senior World Team will be competing this coming weekend in Warsaw, Poland.
The annual Wladyslaw Pytlasinski Memorial will serve as the foursome’s pre-World Championships warm-up tournament — and of course — a week-long training camp is included on the backside. In attendance will be Max Nowry (55 kg, Army/WCAP, world no. 12), Ryan Mango (63 kg, Army/WCAP, world no. 17), Ray Bunker (72 kg, Marines), and John Stefanowicz (82 kg, Marines).
With the Oleg Karavaev Memorial having just concluded on Sunday, there are only a handful of competitive opportunities for Seniors remaining until the World Championships — or the start of the Olympic Year. Both the Ion Cornianu & Ladislau Simon (Romania) and Grand Prix of Germany also take place this weekend; and the Tbilisi Grand Prix (Georgia) follows from August 7-11, just as festivities begin at the Pan American Games in Peru, where the US World Teamers occupying the six Olympic weight classes will compete.
While the Cornianu, German GP, and Tbilisi offer plenty of high-level wrestlers and training conditions, Pytlasinski stands as perhaps the most reliable given its substantial track record. Each year, there are a bevy of former World and Olympic medalists who show up to test themselves one more time before the big show. In addition, and as mentioned in the lead-up to Karavaev, it is an event in which other nations tend to use for their own World Team selections.
Joining the World Team members in Poland will be Final X runner-ups Alex Mossing (72 kg, Air Force/OTC) and Lucas Sheridan (97 kg, Army/WCAP); Brandon Mueller (77 kg, Air Force/WCAP), U23 World Team member Andrew Berreyesa (82 kg, NYAC/FLWC), National Team member Taylor LaMont (60 kg, Sunkist), and three-time World Teamer Patrick Martinez (87 kg, NYAC/FLWC).
A neat reminder: it was the 2018 running of the Wladyslaw Pytlasinski Memorial where G’Angelo Hancock (97 kg, Sunkist, world no. 3) threw and pinned multi-time World/2016 Olympic champ Artur Aleksanyan (ARM, world no. 12) en-route to winning gold.
