Unfolding this weekend at the Community Youth Center in Concord, California is the annual Junior Greco World Duals, one of the most important age-group events held on domestic soil. That’s because each and every year, US athletes get the chance to train and compete with international partners from places like Sweden, Norway, and elsewhere around Europe.

It is an all-encompassing experience for the participants. A week-long training camp precedes two days of dual meets and individual tournament matches. For American wrestlers, it is especially unique. With the exception of Northern Michigan’s Superior International Camp, the Junior Greco World Duals is the only developmental effort that brings a substantial amount of foreign athletes (and coaches) to the United States for high-level training.

Most recently, established stars like Randon Miranda (55 kg, NYAC/OTS) and G’Angelo Hancock (97 kg, Sunkist) used the event to boost their skill-sets prior to taking the mat at the Junior World Championships. Hancock, who was featured in a vast retrospective last month, credits his experience at the Junior Greco World Duals (2016) for enhancing both his arsenal and understanding of international competition. “This was where I began really building my style of wrestling,” Hancock said. “Before, it was always Straight to the bodylock, straight to the bodylock. Or straight to the reverse lift. But Concord, this was where I began witnessing how my moves work and how to set them up.”

Rounds 1-5 took place on Saturday and two teams remain undefeated (Scandinavia and Vikings — both squads are a mix of foreign athletes). CYC, the home club led by highly-respected US coach Mark Halvorson, is still in the hunt heading into Day 2 with a 3-1 record. NMU’s Mason Hartshorn (60 kg) and Nick Boykin (130 kg, Sunkist) are both alive for individual titles, as well.

We will have updated team results and individual placings later on.
