In the aftermath of the United States exiting the Pan-Am Championships with yet another team title, two roster members — Alex Sancho (67 kg, Army/WCAP) and Cohlton Schultz (130 kg, Sunkist) — have secured themselves top seeds at next week’s continental Olympic Qualifier.

Ildar Hafizov (60 kg, Army/WCAP), Kamal Bey (77 kg, Army/WCAP), and Alan Vera (97 kg, NYAC) will receive #2 seeds while three-time National champ Spencer Woods (87 kg, Army/WCAP) is subject to the random draw in his bracket.

On Wednesday, ’20 Olympian Sancho earned his first Pan-American Championships gold medal after having previously finished 2nd (2016) and 3rd (’20). Schultz, who earned silver at the Pan-Am Games in November, was actually making his continental championships debut this week and was able to garner bronze. ’23 Pan-Ams gold Bey also scored a bronze and Vera was the runner-up in his own bracket to Kevin Mejia Castillo (HON). Woods was ousted in the quarterfinal round at 87 kg by longstanding competitor Carlos Munoz Jaramillo (COL). Hafizov did not compete. In his stead, Randon Miranda (NYAC) got the start and came away with his second-career silver from the event.

The ’24 Pan-Am Championships did not by itself determine the seeds for the Olympic Qualifier on February 28. Rather, the accumulation of United World Wrestling “Ranking Series” points is serving as the dataset responsible for influencing the seeds, which next week will only include the top-4 wrestlers in each weight category.
